Loony Moons
Feeling loony? I love a full moon and today is a big one. It’s Thursday, October 17 at 7:26 AM Eastern time. The moon is officially full and shining a giant spotlight on our behavior.
A friend of mine was wondering if the full moon was the reason they were feeling “loony” and sleep-deprived.
The word "lunatic" comes from the Latin word luna, which means "moon". Loony was first used to describe a type of insanity thought to be caused by the moon's phases. Many people believe the moon has a dramatic effect on our emotional health.
Scientists have documented proof the bright light of a full moon lessens the amount of our deep healing REM sleep.
My friend was struggling and genuinely asked:
Do you think I feel loony because of the full moon?
Before I answered their moon question, I asked my friend to tell me more about what they were feeling. They said:
I am an overachiever for these modern times.
On the outside, I am always striving, reaching, searching, and changing to be better.
On the inside, I am perpetually scared, nauseous, and worried that I will never do, or be, enough.
My need to be better every day is why self-help gurus and plastic surgeons are millionaires. I am the target audience for the latest feel better/look better/be better movement.
My racing state of mind is the reason drug companies are making a fortune selling anti-anxiety drugs, sleep aids, and attention-deficit medication.
I am the reason coffee shops and yoga studios are everywhere. I simultaneously try to do more and calm more. The coffee jacks me up and I pretend yoga calms me down. Neither works.
I am perpetually moving at the same frantic pace as my perpetually anxious feelings and my racing mind.
I constantly focus on the problems of others so I don’t feel as if I have problems of my own.
Do you think I feel this way because of the full moon?
I gave my friend my honest opinion. No, I don’t think it is because of the moon.

All bright lights illuminate dark spaces.
For my friend, this big, bright, beautiful FULL MOON is shining a light on our INFLUENCES. I asked my friend:
What influences your decisions and life choices?
Their answer wasn’t the moon. It was the lunacy of unconscious influence that permeates our being.
Feeling looney? I suggest we rise up just like the full moon. Let’s ALL rise up and shine a big bright light on our dark spaces and dark places.
