A Call to Lead
Let’s support Emerging Leaders. A friend of mine asked me to write a blog entitled:
How to deal with bosses who take and take and take – when you’re a giver at heart.
After listening to my friend’s story, I thought the requested blog should be called:
Building Resentment
My friend has built a wall of resentment to protect themselves in the corporate world. Their story is filled with rage and regret.
In our early years of working together, my friend had the most open, giving and loving heart. They followed their leaders without question or complaint.
I first noticed a personality shift when my friend was repeatedly given significantly more responsibilities with no pay increase. That’s one way to build resentment in the workplace.
My friend has heard too many unfulfilled promises by leaders they once respected. My friend explained:
I am tired of being stuck and it’s starting to show. My boss keeps telling me I’m an overachiever and an over-thinker. They said I need to dial it back a bit.
Wait, what??? Dial it back?
When did too much achieving and thinking become a bad thing?
I understand the need for balance, but that’s not my friend’s issue. When someone tells you it’s time to be less, it’s time to be more.
My friend has long outgrown their current level of employment. They are living in the land of empty promises with no pathway to promotions. They are simply drained from years of giving without anything much to show for their extra efforts.
A Void in Leadership
My friend is suffering from a void in leadership. Bitterness grows in the gap between expectations of leadership and reality.
A void in leadership exists for new leaders to emerge.
My friend doesn’t need another pep talk or motivational blog. My friend needs to stand up and become the LEADER they are destined to be.
My friend needs to be reminded of one simple fact they have been hiding deep within the walls of resentment:
It’s time to Lead.
They have been a follower when it has always been their destiny to lead.
Leadership demands a solid action plan for advancement. We need more leaders with better leadership skills. My friend’s only real issue is a lack of leadership training.
Let’s support Emerging Leaders together. Let’s help people rise up and learn more leadership skills. Let’s invest in better leadership training programs.
