What’s This?

Let’s create meaningful change.  One of my worst habits is my inability to talk about my flaws. I certainly have many flaws.

I just don’t want to talk about it.

I much prefer to shame myself in the dark quiet of the night.

Why sleep when I can replay all the moments I wish I had done differently?

I keep my flaws in the darkness by design. I don’t want my nightmares ruining my daydreams.

Why waste a perfectly good day with dark thoughts – especially when ignorance is bliss?

If you talk to me about my flaws, something will change – it just won’t be me. Let’s be honest. It’s easier to change friends than to change MY ACTIONS.

I have a new 5-year-old friend who took candy from their brother, and then they hid it behind their back. When their parents asked if they had the candy, my little friend answered:  No.

If it’s hidden out of my view, does it really even exist?

Let’s just ALL pretend our flaws don’t exist. If it works for a 5-year old and it works for me, I’m thinking it can also work for us as a nation. Let’s just drive around the potholes of life. Besides, we’ll have flying cars soon. We don’t need to fix anything here on the ground.

And, I certainly don’t need to fix ME. Right?

The adults among us know this plan is wrong. The parents of my 5-year-old did a remarkable thing. They didn’t shame my lying little friend. They quietly walked the child over to the big mirror in the foyer. They helped my friend see what was hidden behind their back.

They waited patiently before asking:

What’s this?

This two-word question spoken in the light of day changed everything for my little friend. My 5-year-old spoke the truth out loud and returned the candy to the rightful owner.

And, I learned:

Our flaws can’t be fixed in the dark. For lasting change, we need more mirrors.

Mirrors reflect light. It’s time to see our flaws in the light of day. It’s time to create meaningful change.

And, we need to talk about it.

Let’s create meaningful change together.  Let’s shine more light on our flaws and keep asking: What’s this?
